Access

Tong Park Dam is accessible on foot from several footpaths into the area. It is accessible by vehicle using only one route.

Vehicle access

Turn off Roundwood Road into Langley Lane, then first right into Hollin Head, then left into Lonk House Lane. This is signposted as a public footpath and with a sign to Tong Park Cricket Club. At the end of the lane is a gate which is locked and due to the presence of livestock must be closed and re-locked after use unless a cricket match is in progress when the chain is locked behind the gatepost. The code for our lock (the silver coloured lock) is available by following the link below. Tong Park lock code sequence

Once past the gate drive past the war memorial and slowly down the hill and park on the left on the level ground. Do not block the gate to the cricket pitch. The lake is roughly triangular.

Accessibility

The left side is firm enough to be accessed by wheelchair users, the right hand side is softer and can be muddy but is still accessible without crossing fences or water outlets. The third side, the far bank is accessible from the left side by passing through the gate, near the inlet, and crossing the stepping stones at the North outlet. Or from the right side by crossing the outlet stream at the East outlet and the stile over the barbed wire fence. Vehicles should not park on the right hand side of the track to the lake, they risk getting bogged down in the field in wet conditions.

Rules

  • No more than 20 rods total at any time, single rod users have priority. Second rod users require a permit.1
  • Juniors must be accompanied by an adult, no more than 2 juniors to 1 adult.
  • No keepnets or keepsacks. unhooking mats are recommended.
  • Barbless hooks only.
  • No nuts.
  • Bag limit 2 trout, only 1 Brown Trout in limit. Size limit minimum 30.5 cm (12 inches).
  • No Fires or Camping.

Notes on rules

  • The lake is quite small hence the limit of 20 anglers/rods in use at any time.
  • Juniors must be accompanied by an adult, this is for the safety of juniors.
  • Keepnets are not allowed, large fish are more stressed by confinement than small fish in a keepnet, game and specimen anglers see these as unnecessary, the confinement in a stillwater reduces the ability of fish to take up oxygen from the water, nets are prone to transfer infectious fish diseases between waters and there is no way to force/supervise dipping in disinfectants,  keepnets only have a place in match fishing and matches are not fished on this water. Anyone seen using a keepnet will initially be assumed to be poaching or collecting fish for illegal transfer i.e. theft.
  • Barbless hooks are required to be used since they cause less damage to a fishes mouth. Please try not to play fish too aggressively on over-heavy tackle since this leads to damaged fish and shorter viability.
  • Nuts, if improperly prepared can be toxic, hence their banning.
  • Fire damage is unsightly and with no night fishing allowed at any of our waters there is no need to have a fire.

Stocking

The water is stocked annually with Rainbow Trout usually in March or April. The lake was stocked in 2005 with Carp. There is a natural stock of Brown Trout which tend to breed in Ghyll beck. Tench, Roach, Ide/Golden Orfe, Perch, Bream are also known to be present. Most species of fish are present except Grayling and Pike.
