The weed has become rampant again, the plan is to cut and remove as much weed as possible.

If sufficient people are available there is also a problem with a leak through the dam wall, this preparatory work is a digging exercise unfortunately. Wellington boots/waders and some spades, forks and any other equipment anglers use to drag weed would be useful. I do have the weed-cutter and plenty of rope, but need assistance with transport of tyne equipment.

This is the only suitable date before Easter, and I don’t think many people will want to commit to a working party on the easter weekend, although I am willing if enough people wish to commit.

Free Junior memberships

Due to a legacy left by Brian Butterworth, a committee member who died on Christmas Eve 2011 see the Telegraph and Argus article Fisherman’s lasting legacy

A number of free junior memberships are available¹ to new junior members i.e. girls and boys under 16 years of age. The first 20 Junior members to return the centre page of their yearbook will have their £10 membership re-imbursed.

When sufficient juniors have returned their centre pages we will endeavour to arrange some coaching sessions for them with fully accredited Angling Trust/Angling Development Board angling coaches. The dates of these sessions will be finalised and depend on numbers signing up.

To apply for these junior membership we need you, the potential junior angler to apply either in writing or by email² giving your name, your contact details, preferably with an email address and your parent/guardians contact details. Note³

Great grandfather Brian Butterworth, who was a committee member of Saltaire Angling Association for more than a decade, died suddenly on Christmas Eve, aged 80.

His daughter Darcy Butterworth has decided to make a donation from her dad’s estate to the 145-year-old club in his memory, to provide free membership for junior members.

She said: “He had been a fisherman for as long as I can remember. Even when I was a little girl, he used to do match fishing and take us with him.

“He would always talk to me about the fishing club, so that is why I thought the best thing to do would be to make a donation to them.”

Mr Butterworth, formerly of Myrtle Court, Bingley, had been a fitter and engineer, working at the former Crofts engineering works in Thornbury, Bradford.

A keen sportsman, he played for Bradford City in his late teens and had trials for Arsenal before his first marriage. He also represented the RAF, winning the annual services cup against the Royal Navy in the 1940s.

After leaving the RAF, he worked in diamond mines in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, before joining an engineering company in Germany. He later returned to England and worked as a taxi driver in Shipley before he retired.

Paying tribute to her father, Miss Butterworth said: “He was my hero. He was a kind man and a strong man who always said the right words and kept me on track.”

Saltaire Angling Association committee chairman Andrew Marshall thanked Mrs Butterworth for her gift.

He said: “What we are proposing is that the first few who contact us will be given free membership. Hopefully, that will mean they will follow in Brian’s footsteps and get a lifetime of pleasure from angling.”

He and several members of his family have been on the committee for many years, indeed his son David, and daughter-in-law Sue, are current committee members.
