Working party – Tong park 23rd July

The weed is growing rapidly and so it is proposed to have a working party, weather permitting each Saturday, starting at 10:00 to 10:30 until all the weed has been cut.

I have the necessary equipment stored at home but will need someone to assist with it’s transport to and from Tong Park, since I currently have no vehicle.
The cutter consist of 9× 1-metre blades1 connected by swivels, short lengths of chain attached to the two ends, to weigh the cutter down in the water. Ropes are attached2 and the cutter sawed through the waterweed. The exercise is similar to a low impact rowing machine, so needs 2 or more people to take turns pulling on the ropes for a cutting motion similar to that of an old fashioned sawyer/woodsman 2-man saw.
Please get in touch if you can assist either by phone on the usual numbers 01274-214441 or 07779747139 or email gensec@saltaireangling.info

The cutting exercise took place Saturday 25th June, Saturday 2nd July and was planned for 16th July but the weather was too unpleasant. The turnout was low but this did not matter since the logical method is to cut from the east outlet where the prevailing wind should blow the cut weed, and are easier since fewer and easy to work round tree trunks/branches were involved.

About a third of the lake has been cut so far. Since the next portion requires much more difficult to work around tree trunks and branches more then 2 people are required since rope ends have to be passed round tree trunks and branches. Rakes are a useful extra to remove the cut weed when it has blown to the bank. Much already has and needs to be removed from the water. At least 2 people have to be wearing thigh or chest waders, to pass rope ends round tree trunks from the waterside.
