Working party – Tong park 23rd July

The weed is growing rapidly and so it is proposed to have a working party, weather permitting each Saturday, starting at 10:00 to 10:30 until all the weed has been cut.

I have the necessary equipment stored at home but will need someone to assist with it’s transport to and from Tong Park, since I currently have no vehicle.
The cutter consist of 9× 1-metre blades1 connected by swivels, short lengths of chain attached to the two ends, to weigh the cutter down in the water. Ropes are attached2 and the cutter sawed through the waterweed. The exercise is similar to a low impact rowing machine, so needs 2 or more people to take turns pulling on the ropes for a cutting motion similar to that of an old fashioned sawyer/woodsman 2-man saw.
Please get in touch if you can assist either by phone on the usual numbers 01274-214441 or 07779747139 or email gensec@saltaireangling.info

The cutting exercise took place Saturday 25th June, Saturday 2nd July and was planned for 16th July but the weather was too unpleasant. The turnout was low but this did not matter since the logical method is to cut from the east outlet where the prevailing wind should blow the cut weed, and are easier since fewer and easy to work round tree trunks/branches were involved.

About a third of the lake has been cut so far. Since the next portion requires much more difficult to work around tree trunks and branches more then 2 people are required since rope ends have to be passed round tree trunks and branches. Rakes are a useful extra to remove the cut weed when it has blown to the bank. Much already has and needs to be removed from the water. At least 2 people have to be wearing thigh or chest waders, to pass rope ends round tree trunks from the waterside.

  1. spiral saw tooth []
  2. I have plenty of suitable rope []

Tong Park lock code changed 11th June

The T&A angling lines entry reads:

SALTAIRE AA

Today is the first day of the coarse-fishing season, so keep-nets may be used on the river and any baits are allowed. Last Saturday, between 7am and 8am, the gate was left open and the lock combination still set. The gate was re-locked but by noon the gate was again left open and the lock had disappeared. Members should note the lock does not shut with the combination set. If the gate continues to be left open, Tong Park will be made pedestrian access only. More information on the web-site www.saltaire-aa.org. Please take your used line, litter and bait containers home with you, including any you see near your peg.

Thursday 16th was the first day of the coarse fishing season, from this date keepnets may be used on the river and any baits are allowed.
On Saturday 11th between 7 am and 8 am the gate was left wide open and the lock combination still set on the lock,
the gate was relocked, by 12 noon the gate was again left open and the lock had disappeared. Members should note the lock does *NOT* shut with the combination set. if the gate continues to be left open, Tong Park will be made pedestrian access only. More information on the website http://saltaire-aa.org
Please take your used line, litter and bait containers home with you, including any you see near your peg.

I will add that a keyholder walking his dogs and leaving at about 8am found the gate wide open, relocked the gate and later at about noon found the gate again open and the lock had gone missing. This is totally unacceptable. Livestock can sometimes be on the field. Consequently the lock code was again changed on the 11th June.

8th Jan – 2011 Yearbooks, 9th Jan – Matches

These are being distributed to tackle shops and ticket agents on Saturday 8th January.

There were a number of reasons for the late distribution, including that bane of all humans. That four letter word “WORK”

They should be available in the afternoon.

Matches are planned for both the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool canal on Sunday 9th. The river match is expected to use the bottom length. The canal match, which is more sensitive to the weather in that the canal is frozen and depends how much of a thaw takes place to allow the ice on the canal to be broken. It proved impossible to break the ice last Sunday 2nd January.
