Introduction to the Saltaire AA Forums - Notes: ± »
Integration Notes: ± »

Forums ±»

Initially these are organised into 2 forums. The first is for General topic discussions, the second is for topics related to our fisheries.

Your username is the same as for the rest of the site, although the forums and the blog are completely different packages and use separate databases. so one should be available when the other is in maintenance.
  1. General – *most* WordPress posts and their comments are synchronised initially in this forum
  2. Fisheries
  • Having come across bbPress.
  • I have decided to run with that – Its the forum software behind the WordPress Support Forums which run for WordPress.org WordPress.orq/support, WordPress.com and Automattic.com this means something like Half a Million Posts from 100,000 users ((from its inception  to April 2009)), which runs pretty swiftly.
  • Basically it is swift and light with an extremely good search feature. That speed will be coming here soon is now here. In fact it may already be here when you first read this.
  • It should be at this link you won’t need a new login account since your existing username/password will work.

Synchronization Public posts started in WordPress, unless marked nosync, are echoed to the bbPress forums by default into the General Forum. If Topics are moved to a another forum they continue to be synchronised.

I was using a Plug-in called “Simple:Press Forum” to implement this functionality but it was slow and a bit of a PITA ((a slight technical phrase – if not an acronym)) ((PITA = Pain In The A$@£)) to administer.
I tried to integrate this back in April/May when latest versions of WordPress were 2.7 and bbPress 0.9.0.2 (with a beta of 1.0 around) now datetime=”2009-08-09T13:54:04+00:00″ the versions are 2.8.3 and 1.0.2 respectively, but did not get very far due to incompatibilities between the (then) current stable versions.

The phases of integration planned are

  1. Shared usernames and passwords. √
  2. Persistence of login between the blog and the forum – ((they are completely separate software packages and databases)) ((works bbPress → WordPress, works WordPress → bbPress, if not timed out, otherwise login to bbPress may be required))
  3. Passing (synchronisation) of posts/comments between the forum and the blog √

## 2010-09-27 Our existing forums run on a package bbPress that looks to have no future, the package owners Ma.tt and AutoMattic also owners of WordPress.com, WordPress Software, BuddyPress, Akismet, Gravatar have desided to fold bbPress into a WordPress plugin, the current version 1.0.2 is likely the last that runs with a separate database, some users are staying on version 0.9.0.6 as the code runs faster when not integrated with WordPress.
The forum areas below may disappear if the package, under evaluation Vanilla, linked to above proves satisfactory.
