Weed Cutting – Evenings: Wed 30 May to Tue 5 June

All the weed cutting needs is 2 or 3 people to contact me before say 14:00 any day (and provide transport for me and a bag of gear – ropes and cutter) we can then put in a 2 to 3 hour cutting session

  • Monday 28th May -not available pm meeting
  • Tuesday 29th May -not available
  • Wednesday 30th May
  • Thursday 31st May
  • Friday 1st June
  • Saturday 2nd June
  • Sunday 3rd June
  • Monday 4th June – Bank Holiday – so could be earlier
  • Tuesday 5th June – Bank Holiday – so could be earlier

The proposed start time is say 6:30 or 7 pm, could anybody who is available contact me, the General secretary on 01274-214441 or 07779-747139.

The weed has become rampant again, the plan is to cut and remove as much weed as possible.

The proposed method is to put a rope North-South from the wall in the far side with a pulley and a line to the left (west bank) and use this as a running line with a pulley block and both lines from the ends of the cutter led to the south bank (the north end via the pulley block on the East-West running line) and cut 10 yard wide strips, working northwards so that we do not have to drag tons of uncut weed on the ropes.

The section to the east (nearer to the narrow pipe outlet was cut on 31st March and so does not need to be re-cutr until the rest has been done and is probably too close to the nesting Swans until the cygnets hatch.

I do not think a method using a digger or winch to drag the weed out would work very well.

Swans nesting at Tong Park

We have a pair of swans nesting at Tong Park
the Cob (male) and the Pen (female) could be quite vicious.

It is illegal to disturb Swan nests in any way at all

Anyone who does will be PERMANENTLY banned from the club (and likely from other clubs) and prosecuted by the Police.

Do not feed them mouldy bread – the mould is poisonous to them.

This would appear to be a first time pair (three were seen when they first arrived) and so are probably about 4 years old, they tend to pair for life and produce up to 10 eggs (over a 2-3 week period) with an incubation period of about 35-37 days i.e. 42 days after mating.

Weed Cutting (Working Party) Saturday 26 May 2012

Cancelled – Transport failure due to C2H5OH – PLUS its too DAM hot to work :) .

A working party is planned for Saturday 26th May at Tong Park Dam.
If necessary this will be repeated on Saturday 2nd June (n.b. Bank holidays on Mon 4th and Tues 5th)

The proposed start time is 10 am, could anybody who is available contact me, the General secretary on 01274-214441 or 07779-747139 at any time before 22:00 any day of the week

Does anyone have a small boat?, this would make the job easier.

People moan that the cannot fish because there is too much weed BUT they are unwilling to put in any time to assist in cutting the weed, even half a day a month. True the work is a little bit physical so I do not expect veterans with health problems to help with the job. Some have assisted and felt ill afterwards and I feel bad about letting them push themselves too far.

If people are willing to discus when they are available in the comments below, I am available and willing to organise weed cutting sessions, but if no one bothers to phone to say they that they are available at a time advertised here and in the Telegraph and Argus Angling lines column then the weed will not get cut.

If sufficient people are available there is also a problem with a leak through the dam wall, this preparatory work is a digging exercise unfortunately. Wellington boots/waders and some spades, forks and any other equipment anglers use to drag weed would be useful. I do have the weed-cutter and plenty of rope, but need assistance with transport of tyne equipment.

Working Party Saturday 31 March 2012

A working party is planned for Saturday 31st March at Tong Park.

The proposed start time is 10 am, could anybody who is available contact me, the General secretary on 01274-214441 (except Thursday)- or 07779-747139 at any time before 22:00 any day of the week

Where the weed has become rampant again, the plan is to cut and remove as much weed as possible.

This is the only suitable date before Easter, and I don’t think many people will want to commit to a working party on the easter weekend, although I am willing if enough people wish to commit.

Brian Butterworth

The daughter of lifelong fisherman who died suddenly after suffering a heart attack has given part of his legacy to encourage young anglers into the sport.

Great grandfather Brian Butterworth, who was a committee member of Saltaire Angling Association for more than a decade, died suddenly on Christmas Eve, aged 80.

His daughter Darcy Butterworth has decided to make a donation from her dad’s estate to the 145-year-old club in his memory, to provide free membership for junior members.

She said: “He had been a fisherman for as long as I can remember. Even when I was a little girl, he used to do match fishing and take us with him.

“He would always talk to me about the fishing club, so that is why I thought the best thing to do would be to make a donation to them.”

Mr Butterworth, formerly of Myrtle Court, Bingley, had been a fitter and engineer, working at the former Crofts engineering works in Thornbury, Bradford.

A keen sportsman, he played for Bradford City in his late teens and had trials for Arsenal before his first marriage. He also represented the RAF, winning the annual services cup against the Royal Navy in the 1940s.

After leaving the RAF, he worked in diamond mines in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, before joining an engineering company in Germany. He later returned to England and worked as a taxi driver in Shipley before he retired.

Paying tribute to her father, Miss Butterworth said: “He was my hero. He was a kind man and a strong man who always said the right words and kept me on track.”

Saltaire Angling Association committee chairman Andrew Marshall thanked Mrs Butterworth for her gift.

He said: “What we are proposing is that the first few who contact us will be given free membership. Hopefully, that will mean they will follow in Brian’s footsteps and get a lifetime of pleasure from angling.”

For further information, or to apply for a free junior membership, write to Saltaire AA secretary David Brazendale, 19 St Aidan’s Road, Baildon, BD17 6AJ. Alternatively e-mail the club via its website saltaireaa.org.
